Ever since the first smartphones came onto the scene, there have been lots of myths surrounding their charging and batteries. While some of these myths have turned out to be true, like Apple slowing down your iPhone as its battery degrades, many of them are false. It is impossible to know where these myths came from, but what we can do is dispel them so you can become an informed consumer.

  • Third-party Chargers Will Destroy Your Battery
  • Freezing Your Phone Can Prevent Battery Issues
  • You Should Not Use a Phone While it Charges

Charging Your Phone Overnight Will Destroy the Battery

This myth might have come about because some batteries will overheat and degrade if they are overcharged. However, modern smartphones have protection chips and software that will not let them overcharge. These protections also exist in modern tablets and laptops, meaning that you can leave your phone to charge overnight without worrying about overcharging and the battery degradation it could cause.

What might damage a phone that is being charged overnight is if it gets too hot. This can happen if you place items on the phone or put the phone under your pillow as it charges. Although modern phones have mechanisms for managing heat, this becomes harder if there is not enough airflow around them as would happen in the scenarios discussed.

Third-party Chargers Will Destroy Your Battery

This is only true if you use off-brand chargers that have not been certified. The overwhelming majority of third-party chargers do a great job of charging the phone without harming the battery. Some of them even do a much better job than the chargers that come with your phone.

A good example is phones that can charge at a much higher wattage than their in-box chargers can provide. While your phone might accept 18w charging, for example, the charger in the box might only provide 10w, making the third-party charger a much better deal.

Certified and tested iPhone chargers also do a great job of charging your Apple device without damaging it. Since iPhones no longer come with a charger, you can check out these AUKEY iPhone charger deals to find the right charger for your device.

Freezing Your Phone Can Prevent Battery Issues

The Lithium-ion batteries that modern phones use are not meant to be used in extreme cold or heat. According to battery experts, charging the phone in sub-zero environments causes the buildup of metallic Lithium on the anode which can make the battery less efficient. Since this is a cumulative problem, the battery will eventually die if you do this too many times.

You Should Not Use a Phone While it Charges

There are a lot of people who believe this myth to be true, but you can use your phone while it charges. Many modern phones have some level of charging bypass where, if you have a larger power draw as the phone charges, it will bypass charging and use direct power instead. This varies by phone so be sure to check yours to see if it does this.

Modern devices have progressed so far that we should not worry about the myths and misconceptions surrounding their charging and batteries. Just ensure you are using your phone as intended and not subjecting it to extremes such as freezing temperatures.
