Did you know that the average homeowner spent around $15,000  on home renovation projects in 2018? Updating a home (especially an older home) sometimes requires more than painting and upgrading cabinets, it also requires new wiring.

We are going to go over the reasons you might want to consider upgrading your wiring during a renovation.

Table of Contents

  • More Outlets
  • GFCIs
  • Plugs Falling
  • Moving Lights
  • Ready for New Wiring?

More Outlets

If you are currently scrambling to find where to plug in all of your electronics, then this is a sign that it might be time to contact a reputable company such as  Rock Electrical, Inc. to install additional outlets. Take all of your needs into account such as a home office, video game systems, tablet stations, appliances, gadgets, etc.

If you are using multiple power strips and extension cords to accommodate your daily electrical needs, it is time to have an update and add more outlets. Ideally, you want to have outlets every four to six feet to accommodate everything you need comfortably.

GFCIs

Ground Fault Circuit Interrupters (GFCI) are designed to turn off the electricity if the item that is plugged in comes in contact with any moisture or water. Nowadays these are safety standards found in kitchens and in bathrooms, but older homes did not have those outlets included and they were not required.

If you live in an area that is prone to flooding you want to make sure that you have GFCIs installed on all of the outlets in your homes lower level. Your electrician can switch out an older outlet for an updated GFCI outlet as needed.

Plugs Falling

If you are plugging in an appliance and you notice the plug on the floor a few minutes later, this might mean that it’s time for an upgrade. An outlet should grip the end of the plug when it is plugged into the holes.

If the clip wears out then it will allow the plug to slip out and fall and this can become dangerous. It can cause sparking and a fire hazard. Any outlets like this you want to make sure that you have a professional change them out as soon as possible to avoid any disasters.

Moving Lights

During a renovation, you might want to move lights around or add new ones because your old ones are no longer suitable. At this time it is a great time to update to new wiring to ensure that you do not have hazardous wires behind your ceilings and walls.

Ready for New Wiring?

Now that you are aware of why you might want to also update to new wiring in your home during a remodel, you can make an informed decision on how to move forward. With electrical systems hiding behind walls, it is easy to overlook these during a remodel but something you want to strongly consider.
