The current covid-19 crisis has left thousands of people out of work. Many of those had great and promising careers in manufacturing until the pandemic meant that there was far less demand in some sectors. For instance, if your employer made boards for the aerospace industry, you might find yourself looking for another job.

The alternative, of course, is to use the skills you learned on the production line to start your own business in areas you know there’s going to be demand. There are plenty of opportunities for the smaller concern to do good business servicing and repairing the various tech gadgets the world now seems to rely on.

Here are a few ideas to get you started:

Table of Contents

  • #1 E-waste recycling
  • #2 CCTV camera repairs
  • #3 Electonic games and toys
  • #4 Fixing cell phones

#1 E-waste recycling

You’ll need some space to store your ‘work in progress’, but aside from that, this looks like the perfect place to start. After all, your start-up costs will be low because you’ll be working with what other people have thrown out and would otherwise be taking up space in a landfill. If you can refurbish any of what others have cast aside, not only will you be doing the environment a favor, you’ll also be making money selling the repaired ‘old school’ tech on eBay.

#2 CCTV camera repairs

Almost every shop, business, and building have CCTV these days, and not all of them are under contract or warranty. No small business owner wants to pay out for new cameras (especially if their system is very old and won’t work with newer tech). So advertising yourself as a repairman on local social and general media platforms will soon get the business rolling in.

#3 Electonic games and toys

It’s not uncommon for people to find older tech in their attic or in a box at the back of a closet. The chances of them working after all these years are, at best, slim to none. The most common faults are with power supplies and smaller motors, which are easy to repair. Replacement parts can be sourced online, whether it be a whole PSU or just triacs controlling a fan or motor. These jobs might be few and far between but are very profitable when you come across them.

#4 Fixing cell phones

You won’t be able to deal with all of the most common repairs to a cellphone. You probably don’t want to spend all day replacing cracked screens (though you could make decent money doing that), but then you can fix or replace charging ports, which are high on the list of things that need repairing.

People don’t like sending their phones off to be repaired because they don’t want to be apart from their phone any longer than necessary, so they want to have it done locally. You’ll have to keep a stock of spares on hand and be able to do an ‘on-demand’ service, but quick cell phone repairs are something people are willing to pay a premium for.
