1.No Texting

This rule is entirely non-negotiable for teen drivers. Even glancing down at your phone for half of a second while you’re on the road could easily result in an accident.

They should only use their phone if they absolutely need to, such as if they need a GPS route to get to their destination.

2.Wear Your Seatbelt

A seatbelt is often the difference between life and death during a collision. It’s not uncommon for fatal injuries to occur after a driver is ejected from the vehicle.

So, although it may be inconvenient or uncomfortable, it’s imperative to wear your seatbelt at all times while you’re behind the wheel.

3. Don’t Speed

It can be tempting to go over the speed limit in order to get to your destination faster. But, developing this habit often results in drivers going 10 or 15 MPH faster than they should be.

This will give them less time to react to the movements of other drivers, avoid children or animals that run out into the road, etc. Additionally, they can find themselves with a hefty ticket if they get pulled over while speeding.

4. Always Use Your Headlights

Newer drivers may not be able to recognize when their headlights are off. This is especially true while driving through a particularly well-lit area.

This will make your vehicle far more difficult for other drivers to see. You’ll also be less likely to notice something on the road that you need to avoid.

For example, you may not notice a pothole that you could have driven around. This can easily result in expensive damage to your vehicle. In extreme cases, you might not be able to see a pedestrian if it’s late at night.

5. Anticipate Other Drivers’ Behavior

You should always expect other drivers to behave erratically and break the rules of the road. To elaborate, you should never assume that another driver will stop at a stop sign or red light, that they will use their blinker, etc.

While it’s impossible to prepare for every situation, you’ll be able to minimize your risk of getting into an accident. If you do find that your teen was involved in a collision, it’s worth getting in touch with a qualified car accident attorney to help sort things out.
